The rise of sharing economy has gained massive prominence in the public discourse as governments around Europe attemt to regulate the expanding disruptive companies such as Uber and Airbnb. The policy attention devoted to the issue is expected to grow even further with the recent publication of several notable policy papers, most remarkably European Commission’s Communication on the European Agenda for the Collaborative Economy. Scholars across disciplines have shifted their attention towards this issue, however, there remains a substantial lag between the research and policy cycle. With our paper, prepared for the special issue of Transfer: European Review of Labour and Research, we would like to help close this gap by exploring the impact of sharing economy on the online job market and outlining a potential of these new business models to offer sustainable solutions. Working with datasets obtained from sharing economy platforms, we show the dual nature of sharing economy, which on one hand leads to expansion of the “one night stand” working arrangements – one-time task completion which creates insecurity for workers and low income streams in the long-run, but at the same time creates a potential for a move towards responsible consumption and thus a more sustainable pathway for the society as a whole.
