The labour market position of elderly displaced workers

Marloes de Graaf-Zijl (CPB)

Older workers who lose their jobs experience severe impacts of their job loss. They have a hard time finding new employment and, if they do so, experience substantial wage cuts. This paper investigates to what extent the impact of displacements differs between older and younger workers. Administrative data on the Dutch labour force are used to follow all Dutch workers who lost their jobs due to plant closures or mass layoffs in the period 2003-2007 (soon, more recent years will be added). We graphically show the impact of job loss on employment prospects and wage growth. The econometric strategy is aimed at disentangling the effect of age, tenure, industry and business cycle effects. Work in progress.
