Most labour market experts claim that the Dutch labour market is not performing well – or even not performing at all ­– for older workers, due to institutions which hamper a flexible labour market, such as strict employment protection regulation and the existence of seniority pay. In this presentation, Paul de Beer critically assesses this claim, by confronting it with the economic theory of (almost) perfect labour markets and empirical facts and figures on the Dutch labour market. He identifies several challenges for the labour participation of the elderly and suggests some policy reforms.
