Abstract

The Euro Crisis throws up three questions regarding labour relations:

  • have they contributed to the occurrence of the crisis?
  • have they been a hindrance in responding to the crisis?
  • should they be changed as a result of the crisis?

These questions are posed against the background of the behaviour of individual European countries – read, ‘periphery’ – since monetary unification. For the answers I consider whether the introduction of the Euro has spoilt wage formation in certain countries, whether labour market (in)flexibilities have anything to do with the evolution of the crisis in individual countries, and last but not least whether monetary union in future can be squared with a diversity of labour relations across countries within the union.

The presenter

Wiemer Salverda is Director of AIAS and special chair Labour Market and Inequality (at AMCIS UvA).
